News of a sad nature; Ashland Area Woodcarvers founding member Robert "Bob" Gill of Huntington WVA. passed away December 8, 2015 after a short illness. Bob was 89 years old and was a WWII veteran, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in Germany. Bob was an accomplished wood carver having pieces displayed in The Smithsonian and the Ronald Reagan Library. Please keep Bob's family in your thoughts and prayers.
Ashland Area Wood Carvers would like to congratulate Brenda Tolliver and Bob Kerr on their marriage Sunday December 15, 2013. Both Brenda and Bob are members of A.A.W.C., they are both regular attendee's at club functions. Just proof that love and wood carving go together!! Congratulations Brenda and Bob, we wish you both many happy years of making the wood chips fly !!!!!
Ashland Area Woodcarvers at Artistry In Wood 2013 make a great showing. The club was represented in competition by four members and we had twenty-three members make the trip to the show. The competitors had good results with two second place ribbons and one first place ribbon. Roy Prince recieved a second place ribbon for his human stylized piece with a strong entry. Allen Woods recieved first place in the "Moore Roughout" catagory winning a first place ribbon and a $35.00 gift certificate for Moore's Roughouts. Gina Woods, Allen's wife recieved second place in the "Moore Roughout" catagory getting a second place ribbon and a $25.00 gift certificate for Moore's Roughouts.
Ashland Area Wood Carvers were well represented at the 2013 Poage Landing Days festival in Ashland KY., the festival was September 20 - 22 and had a large attendence this year. We were able to make many new contacts, make some new friends and introduce a lot of folks to our craft. Look for us again next year during the festival, if your interested we might even let you try your hand at making some wood chips!!!!
Friday April 12, 2013, Ashland Area Wood Carvers hosted a three day seminar in relief carving taught by instructor Jim Foster. Jim helped everyone with their projects and provided numerous tips to use in carving. There were many projects for the students to choose from and everyone's projects turned out great. Thanks Jim!!! We had a great time and learned a lot !
The Ashland Area Wood Carvers would like to recommend the annual Buckeye Woodcarvers Roundup, many of our members have attended the last three years and have found the roundup to be an enjoyable event. Poor Farmer's campground provides the location and is a very nice facility, if you are not into camping there are a number of nice hotels within a five minute drive from the campground. We look forward to seeing you there!!!
04/04/2013 Ashland Area Wood Carvers held it's first inner club carving contest, with a popular vote to determine winner last night. Club members submitted thirteen entries to be judged. With Henry Ramey's beautiful carousel horse being named winner. Henry received a blue ribbon and a twenty-five dollar check for his efforts. Congratulations Henry !!!!
Ann Wilson, Ashland Area Woodcarvers oldest member celebrated her 96th. birthday on January 25th. Annie, as most of our members who know her well, has been a member since our club began. Ann is an excellent carver who carves minatures as well as chip carving. Ann is a retired school teacher with the Ashland Public School System, everyone at AAWC would like to wish "Annie" a happy birthday!!!!
